My computer is no more, at least for awhile.
Yesterday it froze while I was typing, and when I tried to restart it displayed a flashing folder with question mark:
Combined with a clicking sound coming from the body of the laptop, I’m pretty sure it’s a hard drive failure. So updates are going to be a little sparse for awhile while I try to figure this out. There is an apple store in Cape Town, where I was thinking of going after Christmas anyway. With any luck they’ll be able to do the neccesary repairs. That would sure be easier (and probably cheaper) than shipping it back and forth from the States.

I think the flashing question mark doesn’t so much indicate a drive failure as a prompt to seriously evaluate why it is you purchased an Apple product. I mean c’mon, would an IBM Thinkpad really fail out like this? I rest my case.
Hi Oscar!
Facebook has been kind enough to notify me that it is your birthday today sooo…HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! It looks like you are having a wonderful time in Lesotho. I can’t imagine what it’s like to live there but I’m sure it has been a very enlightening experience. Anyway, I hope you have a great birthday! How do they go about celebrating birthdays in Lesotho? Take care.
Claire
Happy Birthday my dear son! I wish I could be there to give you a cake and gifts and a little party hat! Sending much love instead, Mom
HAPPY BIRTHDAY OSCAR!
Hope you are doing something fun today.
Love you!
Adrienne
Happy Birthday Oscar! I’m sure I can speak for the returning fencers when I wish you a happy birthday. I can also speak for myself by wishing you a happy birthday. Sorry to hear about your computer. I guess this puts a hold on all of your various methods of updating us (at least for the time being). Happy Birthday, good luck with the computer and of course stay safe.
~Cathy
Happy Birthday Oscar!
I’m sorry about your computer, but I guess now you will learn to live without it for a while. Which in all honesty is probably something we should all do at some point in our lives. Hmm…maybe it is a birthday present in disguise??? Of course, then your Big Christmas present is getting it fixed
I hope you have an interesting birthday full of adventure and good wishes!
Karlynn
Happy Birthday!!
Hang in there with no interwebs…
(In a freaky coincidence, here’s a twin moment for you — my external hard drive just failed as well. Creepy)
Twenty three years ago when I held a tiny little guy for the first time, I was filled with wonder at that miracle in my arms.
Today my arms are empty, but the wonder remains. Along with delight, admiration, and respect.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SON!
Oscar!
Happy birthday! Hope all is well and your computer is fixed soon. Thanks for your hard work to make the world a better place.
Peace,
Jonathan
Hi Oscar,
Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you…..Hope it’s been a good day. Hugs and kisses and lots of love.
Greg, Deneen, and the boys
PS: Yeah Barack! Isn’t it cool to be proud to be an American again?!
The EXACT same thing happened to me last week. i had to get a new hard drive, of course this also meant updated software and more memory so i can’t say i lost in the situation.
I thought of you the other day when I was watching a dvd of sigur ros. You would appreciate the story they told through music. If i stumble across a dvd burner I am going to make a point to send it your way.
Apparently it was your birthday, wish I could have been there to bake you a cake.
The guess is probably about right. That being said, if you DO get it to an apple store, make sure you get an appointment with those mac genious *(*U$#s… mine needs a new keyboard (hai2u,waterdamage), and for some reason the store in ‘Cuse was not doing repairs. Soooooooo, I called Albany to ask them, and they say sure… So I make the drive, and lo and behold they forgot to mention you can’t do walk ins, even to drop something of to have it repaired at a later date.
Good times.
Just a heads up.
I’ve been in contact with the folks in Cape Town, they know I’m coming, and the problem. Just a matter of setting up an actual appointment.
